When installing electric underfloor heating, achieving the correct cable coverage is essential to ensure even heat distribution, efficient performance, and long-term reliability. Getting this right means your system will deliver consistent comfort without hot or cold spots, keeping running costs low and your floor surface perfectly balanced in temperature.
The principle of cable coverage is simple: the heating cable should be laid evenly across the floor area to provide a uniform spread of warmth. If cables are placed too close together, the system can overheat; if they’re too far apart, you’ll notice uneven temperatures. The spacing, also known as cable pitch, depends on the wattage output required for the room and the type of insulation beneath the system.
For most domestic installations, heating cables are spaced between 50mm and 100mm apart. Smaller areas like bathrooms and kitchens often require a higher wattage per square metre, meaning cables are laid closer together to provide faster heat-up times. In larger or well-insulated spaces, the spacing can be increased slightly without losing performance.
Before laying your cables, it’s crucial to plan your layout carefully. Start by measuring the usable floor area, excluding fixed units such as kitchen cabinets, baths, or toilets. Always test the cable resistance before, during, and after installation to ensure it matches the manufacturer’s specifications. Using a high-quality insulation board beneath the cables can also improve heat efficiency by preventing downward heat loss.
Once installed, the heating cable should be covered with a suitable levelling compound or adhesive before laying the final floor finish. Tiles, stone, and laminate flooring all work well with electric systems, provided that the materials and adhesives used are compatible with underfloor heating.
A well-planned cable coverage layout will not only optimise performance but also extend the life of your system, helping it operate safely and efficiently for many years to come.
