High Output vs Standard Output Joist Kits

The main difference between high output and standard output joist underfloor heating kits is the pipe spacing, which determines heat output and suitability for different heating systems.

High output joist systems use 150mm pipe centres, providing higher heat output and allowing the system to run efficiently at lower water temperatures. This makes them suitable for air source heat pumps (ASHP), as well as rooms with higher heat loss such as older properties, extensions, or areas with large windows.

Standard output joist systems use 200mm pipe centres, offering a more cost-effective solution for well-insulated homes where heat demand is lower. These systems are typically paired with gas boilers and are suited to general domestic heating requirements.

Both systems are installed between timber joists using aluminium heat spreader plates, which help distribute heat evenly across the floor. The correct choice depends on insulation levels, floor construction, and the type of heat source being used.
