A cold tiled bathroom floor is often the point at which underfloor heating moves from a nice-to-have to a practical upgrade. The top electric heating kits make that upgrade straightforward, but the best kit is not simply the one with the highest wattage or lowest upfront price. It must suit the room, subfloor, floor finish and intended use, with the right controls and insulation behind it.
Electric underfloor heating is particularly effective in individual rooms, refurbishments and awkward spaces where extending a wet heating system would involve disproportionate disruption. A well-specified kit provides comfortable, evenly distributed warmth without radiators taking up wall space. The key is selecting the system type before looking at kit size.
What makes a top electric heating kit?
A complete electric heating kit should address more than the heating element itself. At a minimum, it needs a correctly sized cable mat or loose cable, a compatible thermostat with floor sensor, and clear installation guidance. In many projects, insulation boards, fixing materials and a suitable levelling compound are equally important to performance and longevity.
Quality also comes down to suitability. A premium heating mat installed over an uninsulated concrete slab can take longer to warm up and send too much heat downwards. Conversely, a modestly powered system can feel very effective in a small, well-insulated bathroom with an appropriate tile finish.
For UK projects, look for a system designed for permanent installation beneath the chosen floor covering, backed by a meaningful warranty and supported by technical advice. This matters when calculating heat loss, choosing output, or working around sanitaryware and fixed kitchen units.
Top electric heating kits by project type
Heating mat kits for simple, open floor areas
Cable mat kits are usually the most efficient option for regular-shaped rooms with clear, open floor space. The heating cable is pre-spaced on a mesh backing, allowing it to be rolled out quickly across the prepared subfloor. They are a common choice for bathrooms, kitchens, en-suites and conservatories where porcelain, ceramic or natural stone tiles are planned.
A mat kit is not necessarily better for every room. It works best where its width can be laid with minimal cutting and turning. The mesh can be cut to change direction, but the heating cable must never be cut, shortened or crossed. Rooms with lots of alcoves, curves or permanent furniture may leave too much unused floor area for a mat to be the most practical choice.
For tiled floors, outputs around 150 W/m² are widely used in standard insulated rooms. Higher-output systems, often 200 W/m², can be appropriate for areas with greater heat loss, such as conservatories or rooms over unheated spaces. Output should be based on the room construction and heating requirement, not an assumption that more watts will always mean better results.
Loose cable kits for awkward layouts
Loose cable kits offer greater flexibility because the installer sets the cable spacing. They are particularly useful in bathrooms with fixtures, small cloakrooms, bay-window areas, curved rooms and kitchens where the heated area sits between fixed units and an island.
This flexibility takes more care during installation. Consistent cable spacing is essential to avoid cooler patches or localised overheating, and the cable must be kept clear of fixed furniture without airflow beneath it. A loose cable system is therefore often preferred by experienced installers, although a careful homeowner can prepare the floor and arrange for a qualified electrician to complete the electrical work.
Loose cable also works well when a specific heated area needs to be covered precisely. Rather than buying a larger mat and leaving sections unused, the cable can be designed around the available walkable space. Accurate measurements are vital – exclude baths, shower trays, fitted cabinets, toilets and any other permanent fixtures from the heating area.
Low-profile kits for refurbishment floors
Floor height is one of the most common constraints in renovation work. If doors, thresholds or existing floor levels cannot be altered, choose a low-profile electric heating kit designed to sit within tile adhesive or a thin levelling layer. Cable mats are often suitable for this approach when installed over a sound, prepared subfloor.
The trade-off is that low build-up does not remove the need for insulation. Where height allows, a suitable insulation board beneath the heating system improves response times and helps direct heat into the room. On a concrete floor, this can make a noticeable difference to both warm-up performance and running costs.
Timber subfloors need particular attention. The floor must be rigid, level and suitable for the proposed finish. Depending on the build-up, a tile backer board, decoupling layer or appropriate overlay solution may be needed to manage movement and protect the tiled surface. The heating kit is only one part of the floor construction.
Choosing the right output and kit size
Start with the free floor area, measured in square metres. Do not use the full room dimensions unless the entire floor will remain uncovered and open to the room. Heating beneath fixed units, boxed-in furniture or sanitaryware is not recommended because heat can become trapped.
Once the heated area is known, consider whether the system is providing primary warmth or simply taking the chill off the floor. In a well-insulated bathroom, electric underfloor heating may provide the main heat source. In an older room with high heat loss, large glazing or limited insulation, it may work best alongside a towel rail or another heat source.
The floor finish affects the decision too. Tiles and stone conduct heat well and are the natural partners for electric underfloor heating. Engineered wood, laminate, LVT and carpet can also be suitable, but their manufacturer must approve use with underfloor heating and the combined tog value of carpet and underlay must remain within the stated limit. A thermostat with a floor sensor is especially important with timber and resilient floor finishes, as it limits floor temperature to protect the material.
Do not treat insulation and controls as optional
An electric heating kit can operate without a sophisticated thermostat, but it will not deliver the same control or efficiency. A programmable thermostat allows heating periods to match the household routine, while floor sensing maintains a comfortable and safe surface temperature. Wi-Fi controls can be useful where app-based scheduling or remote adjustment genuinely suits the property, but a reliable programmable thermostat is often all a single-room installation needs.
Insulation is the other essential consideration. Insulation boards reduce downward heat loss and can improve response time, particularly over solid floors. The correct thickness depends on available floor height, subfloor construction and the wider build-up. In a tight refurbishment, even a thin thermal board can be worthwhile. In a new floor build-up, thicker insulation may be the more sensible long-term choice.
Using compatible adhesives, primers and levelling compounds also protects the installation. The product must be suitable for underfloor heating and for the chosen floor finish. Skipping this detail to save a small amount at the start can lead to cracking, poor bonding or unnecessary remedial work later.
Installation checks that protect the warranty
Before tiling or applying the final floor finish, test the heating cable and record the resistance reading. Test it again after installation and before commissioning. These readings provide an important installation record and help identify accidental cable damage before the floor is covered.
The floor sensor should be placed in conduit between two runs of heating cable, not touching a cable and not positioned where it cannot be replaced. Keep the system clear of expansion joints, and never drive fixings through the finished floor where the cable is installed.
Electrical connections and final testing must be completed by a qualified electrician in line with current UK wiring regulations. In bathrooms and other special locations, the electrical design requires particular care. When electric heating is not the best choice
Electric underfloor heating is highly practical for a bathroom, kitchen refurbishment or one-off room upgrade. For a whole-house new build, large extension or multi-zone property, a water underfloor heating system is often the better long-term proposition, particularly where a heat pump is planned. Wet systems generally have a higher installation commitment but can be more economical to run across larger areas.
